Step by Step Guide for Importing Pets into Malaysia

1.

Check Pet Import Eligibility
  • Only pets from approved countries may enter. Prohibited or restricted breeds include Pit Bull, Akita, Rottweiler, and others. Pets must have an ISO-standard microchip.

2.

Apply for a Malaysian Import Permit
  • Submit online via the ePermit system under DVS Malaysia. Valid for 30 days – ensure your pet arrives within that time frame.

3.

Complete Vaccinations & Health Requirements
  • Rabies vaccine: Required 30+ days before arrival, but not older than 12 months.
  • Other required vaccinations:

Dogs – DHPP + Leptospirosis

Cats – FVRCP

  • Health certificate from a government-accredited vet within 7 days of travel.

4.

Book Pet-Friendly Flights & Crates
  • Use IATA-compliant travel crates only.
  • Recommended airlines: Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways.

5.

Arrival at KLIA, Inspection & Quarantine
  • Arrival inspection at KLIA’s Quarantine Station.
  • Most pets are quarantined for 7 days. Released after passing a final vet check by DVS officers.
